MATCH PREVIEW | Rhinos and Valkyrie open double header this Sunday

A fortnight on from their first meeting in the Super 4s competition, Leeds Rhinos Women and York Valkyrie are set to battle again at the LNER Community Stadium on Sunday afternoon, kick off 12pm.

In a double header with the men's game at 3pm, Leon Pryce's Valkyrie need to accumulate wins in the remaining weeks of the season if they are to force their way into the play off conversation. They take on Lois Forsell's Rhinos, who added an eighth consecutive wins of the season last time out against St Helens and remain close to league leader's Wigan Warriors.

Here's your match preview:

Opposition

A second defeat of the season to Leeds in the opening game of the Super 4s left York Valkyrie with a small mountain to climb as their ambitions of a spot in the top three start to drift away.

Even with talismanic full back Tara-Jane Stanley back in the lineup against the Rhinos in the first game of the Super 4s, the England international hasn't been able to turn the side up the league table as they were handed a 44-0 loss by Wigan Warriors in a largely unchanged squad to the one that ran out at AMT Headingley. Megan Pakulis' two-try performance against the Rhinos last time out continued an excellent season for the Canadian international on her return from the NRLW, but the tries across the back line from threats Eboni Partington (5 tries), Petra Woods (5 tries) and Monique Donovan (5 tries) haven't been as high as in previous seasons as well as in comparison to the Rhinos edges (Whitehead = 14 tries, Stead = 15 tries, Boyd = 15 tries).

The season doesn't get any easier for York over the coming weeks, especially as they take on St Helens in back-to-back matches at the end of August and start of September. Currently two competition points behind the Red Vee in the league table, wins in either or both of those matches will prove vital if the side is to make a late charge for a spot in the semi finals. They then close the Super 4s against Wigan on home soil in what could be another important match - depending how Saints perform against Leeds away from home.

In the wake of Lindsay Anfield's departure, the 2023 and 2024 Women's Super League champions have maintained most of the squad that has proved vital in the club's recent success, as well as promoted its talents from within the Valkyries' Academy ranks. In just the Super League regular season, York's losses have only come to the sides above them in Wigan, Leeds and Saints as they confidently saw off the challenges of Huddersfield, Leigh, Featherstone and Barrow all by 40-point margins to ensure they qualified for a sixth successive Play Off finish. After struggling with just two combined wins since joining the top tier of the Women's competition in 2018, the club's growth is a far cry from where it started as Pryce leads them into a new chapter.
